so there was a big change after talking w/ Don on thursday.,.
since my maps really didn't work (can't show the actual product inside) I had to come up w/ a solution..
after seeing my VM which had a map to educate them the location, Don suggested 'what about having a touch screen on the VM?'

A touch screen VM that provide extra info about the product, culture, and actural photo of snacks that are not available on the package...
So instead of having photo map on my package I could have more fun without it..
and decided to do some handdrawings to illust each culture....

last thursday... I realized that some of maps on the package does not show enough of the snack inside (especially Japan and Italy because of their long and thin geographical shapes)..
so I tried quick changes and made some prototype.

my findings are

1) showing actual food through transparency window isn't a good idea

you have no control over the location of the snack. it also does not look good if you see the broken snack inside. (rejected)

2) having window shaped snack photo on the package. YES. with wider/bigger window
you can see the "part" of the snack well. if the photo is beautifully taken, no problem of location or broken pieces.

BUT still "part" of the snack can be shown, not the whole. you can't still find out what kind of snack it is before you actually try it. I found there is no big difference between having photos in the long and thin map form and in a wider/bigger window form.

I will admit that there is a difficulty to know what snack is inside, but isn't it the attractiveness of mail? you don't know what's inside until you open it! :-p

I have to make sure my description is tasty enough to persuade them to try it.

To come up w/ interesting name, I did some research and some brainstorming

so final names are,

Triple happiness - chinese mixed dried fruits & nuts ( dried orange, peach, peanuts) since they symbolize happiness in chinese culture

Stickie Trickie - Japanese mochi with edamame paste.. it is sticky and also abit tricky to eat!

Scent of basil - basil flavour Italian biscotti. Basil means love in Italy.. so like the movie ' Scent of a woman' :-)

Kimchi Kick! - Korean kimchi flavour rice cake. the spicyness of kimchi kicks!!

Oh honey! - Greek yogurt with honey and walnut. They traditionally eat this before their honeymoon... ;-)

Fully packed - Indian Lentils and coconut flavor nutrition bar.

Just got tanned! - Baked potato chips with Spanish olive oil

I made some changes, and printed it. As I worried, some types were pretty small.
I made prototypes which was quite fun! decided on format. some snack package had to be get larger to contain actual snacks in the package..

After then, I asked my bf (is not relate to any design major) about my design.
He said, the drawings around the logo did not work for him cause it interupted his focus.
keep it simple works better for him which I agreed LATER...
He also mentioned to put more details (descriptions)..
other than that he liked it.. of course..kk

meeting w/ Tak

so right before meeting Tak, I gave some changes to the background: make the lines
less visible at the end.
Changed collaged stamps to flags..

While I was talking to Tak, I realized that the typeface I used before seemed to work well
by itself without the Asian look like symbol.
Since my design was so stripy, I thought this simple but yet strong and stamped treatment will
work well with overall design. He said the type treatment for the name of each snack and description work quite well. Also mentioned I should consider rename each snack to make it more fun and appealing to the youth. Suggested to give some dark atmosphere around corners to make it.. more.. !!!!!!

oh! and PRINT !!!! and CHECK!!! if the type is too small~

Since I was suggested to change "express" to "origin" for my brand ( I also thought 'origin' sounds better and more connected with my brand than 'express'), I started do some logo explorations.

Since I did not think my first brand name "(o)rigin" would fit with the mail concept, I started writing another lists of words that relate to my project.

And I came up with "express"

In spite of having good ideas in the last post, as you can see, I struggled.. no fresh striking idea..
I looked at my "package design inspiration collection" to generate new ideas and I found this concept truly fits with my project.

am I too honest to say that I got inspiration from this? I thought that making packages as letter really suits for my overall project! I decide to go on with this idea.

-Since the youth are all using emails, text messages, etc they have never or quite few experiences of getting mails in hand. I thought this experience of delievering letters/parcel will
excite the youth and they will appreciate more.

-you send letters or parcel to your friends usually or even you build friendship through pen-pal.
I think mail concept will help build more relationship between the user and other culture in a warm and friendly way.

-who would not excited by getting mails? I always love to get mails. I love the hand feel and stamps; everything that I see, touch, and smell(?) I want to give life to my package design.

last saturday

On saturday, I had to make big decisions! I had to decide whether I would stay with the automat format of vending machine, the cultural snack selection I'd updated, and ideas for my package designs.

Since I realized the importance of the package design, I had to develop my basket to something else. For the automat idea, the greatest thing was that the user actually can see the food through the window and also the automat format is quite new to the usrs. I wanted to keep it.
However, as I developed and sketched my package designs, I realize that there are so many restrictions working with automat format in terms of maintenance for freshness(since my new selection of snacks is daily+fresh food). Also, I found it is kind of meaningless to design package for such vending machine.

So I decide to go back to my first idea that I proposed in Phase 2 presentation..
I came back to the idea to work with ordinary vending machine with snacks that can be storaged for longer period.

So I started sketching some ideas in the last photo at the bottom.
I still wanted to keep the window idea to show what is in the package.
I had conversation w/ Chloe, and through the conversation we came up with good ideas (big thanks to Chloe!!)

-use the window to shape each country which will become the illustration for my package.
-arrage every package in a way that will make a certain image overall, so that the user wants to collect every product in order to make a poster out of the experience. (map of the world, logo image)

last friday

I was working on designing my vending machine on last friday. I tried to have the feel of retro but kinda did not work out. I was having difficult time to mimic the style.

At the end of the day, when I checked my e-mail from my mentor, I was like "@-@...."
what he suggested me was so true. he said,

- the focus is relying very heavily on the design of - and interaction with the vending machine.
- the real experience is the interaction with the product.
- After the food is payed for and the customer is holding the food, that is where the 'real experience' begins... Outside of the food, how much will a single color basket with the country's name printed on it add to that experience? Is there any keepsake from that experience?
- colours should be more edible
- not to be bound by the cliches associated with that era. add to that influence so that you
create something fresh and new.

This comment really helped me pause a bit and realize what's more important thing to do for my project. I totally ignored the value of packaging and later experience with the product outside of the food..how should they feel when they get the package? it should be exciting, curious, friendly, fresh. the basket will not help them feel in this way.. I had to stop working on the vending machine and rethink what's my primary goal through this whole experience.. what experience is more meaningful than other?

So this is the direction I am working with. The top one is just one of my sketches I will try to come up with several designs and select one that I like.. The cultural plates will have similar or the same graphic but with different color treatment..

bottom one is for my naming and type treatment.. I want bold, modern, simple, geometric typefaces like futura, century gothic, and bauhaus for fun.. I wish I can have really pretty modern typefaces, but I should stick with what I have rather than buying it... :(

1) this VM is the origin; it will provide the beginning chance of experiencing other cultures
2) this VM will provide the user with knowledge of where each food came from, the origin.

I think Origin has a good connection to my VM... and the symbol "(O)" came from my first idea of two round tables around the cylinder shape vending machine in the in the middle. When you look at it on the top, the shape is like "(O)".. even though I am not going to work with the cylinder shape VM anymore, "(O)" symbol is still connected with the meaning of the word 'origin'..

I was really worried about the possibility of getting rejection for my new direction today.
Since I was suggested with two different directions from Don and Tak during last two weeks, I had to find a way to reflect both suggestions in my design process. I think, I managed okay and quite appreciated the opportunity that I could do 'go back and forth'..

okay, my first idea was to make the vending machine in a cylinder shape so that people can go/walk around with their friend and select their snacks. And also, I was going to put round shape of tables around the machine like "(O)" so that the youth can seat with their friends and share snacks. However, I realized that the shape and table will demand a huge space which won't work in a secondary school environment! The school is not going to give me that space for the vending machine! The idea was developed while I was thinking about the user experience ( how to make the experience more fun n dynamic), but I decided to let it go in order to make it really work in terms of space requirement. And the round shape demand more footprints, too. So I am sticking with the regular rectangular shape(wider than the ordinary ones)..or even two semicircular machines will work too.

I also thought about designing take away cards that will be displayed at the front of each section door. The cards will include the illustration of food, beneficial info about the ingredients, nutritional fact, ect.. But it will cost extra for the company in terms of management and printing. ( they need to keep the wage/production cost low to provide low cost for the user). Instead, I can just put the label on the food package cellophane, it has to be with the food under the law anyways..

Don liked the way how the vending machine actually shows the food itself through the window.
Through the window, the user should be able to read the name, ingredients, and nutritional fact easily( I should think about where the label will be placed on the package)

I know it is hard to understand and ugly/messy drawing..I just started which is good!

- so I can see that my automat is a cylinder shape that the youth can go around.
- there will be 2-3 machines that looks similar, and each contains two different cultures.
- around the machines, there will be tables where the youth can seat and share there food. I guess on the table, I can put my healthy ingredients research in order to knowledge them, also they can talk about it.
-I will designe 2-3 shapes of plates that represent each culture (different color codes)

The reason why I abondoned the idea of doing package design was that I decided not to limit the kinds of snacks for each culture. There are so many kinds and my little selection may not be attractive to the youth. Without firmly deciding the content(what kind of snack), there is no way to do the package design.

However, I am going to do some kind of package design that covers my food in the vending machine. The package will represent the cultural aspect rather than what's inside(what kinds of snack or ingredients) So the package design's purpose is only to differenciate each culture.

I had to look up the dictionary in order to define "snack" since I kept thinking and limiting 'snacks' as chips, bars, candies, chocolate, etc..

At this point, I am intrested into this Automat or Automatiek idea..

Automatiek(Dutch)

A common type of snack bar in the Netherlands is called automatiek and is similar to an automat. It has a wall lined with coin-operated machines. Each has a vertical row of little windows, with a (usually hot) snack behind each, e.g. a croquette, a frikandel or a hamburger.

After inserting a coin into a slot, an individual opens one of the windows and removes a snack. The machines are heated so that the snacks stay hot. Behind the machine is the kitchen where the snacks are prepared, with the little windows being re-supplied from the back.

In addition, a snack counter for food less suitable for vending machines is usually available in the same area (example: french fries).

Automatieks may or may not provide chairs for customers. Sometimes the vending machines are in an outside wall, and no shelter is provided.

These vending machines are often located at railway stations or in busy shopping streets. One large chain of these automatieks is FEBO.

When 4-5 friends come to buy snacks together, how would their movement around the V.M look like?

1) it seems to be more active and fun when you can walk around the V.M in circle with your friends.
2) in the corner seems to be boring and passive. not exciting.
3) each V.M at different places(floors) seems to be difficult for 4-5 people to buy snacks together.
4) V.Ms in a room feel stuffy, closed.
5)'U' shape room gives better space, more active, interactive than #4.
7) V.Ms located separately in a room seems to be meaningless, they should be united in order to fit into my concept.

So I liked the idea of walking around the vending machines in an open space. I think every cultural vending machine should be located at the same place for convenience and for the united feeling.

When I talked with Tak, he mentioned that
"my selection of cultural snacks doesn't look tasty + attractive for the youth"

hmmm,, I tried to select snacks that represent the culture and also use healthy ingredients.
If I were the user, I would try everything and find delicious, but if it doesn't look tasty for the youth, which seems to be true, it will not work.

At this point, I decided that I am not going to limit what snacks will be in my product line as long as I define it as healthy and cultural. What I need to focus more is the visual aspect and the concept how to engage the youth to experience cultural snacks rather than what I am going to make them to eat..

What I should focus on is how to create the experience more fun, exciting, and sharable with others... so that they realize, learn, and interact more with other cultures..
Avoid the ordinary vending machine.. While I was talking with Tak and Chloe, there were few
crazy ideas about the new way of operating vending machines..

-mysterious concept : the user can open the cover and check what kind of snack inside.

-ball track : the snack itself can be packaged in the ball (gum or candy) and the way it delivers to the user can be fun. With the map background, the selected snack travles from its origin to Vancouver which is the destination.

-random flavor : It can be chips with different cultural flavor. When the user press random button, the machine gives you random flavors. you cannot expect what you'll get.

-Automat : it is a fast food restaurant where simple foods and drink are served by coin-operated and bill-operated vending machine. (below) You can look at the actual food through the window. With the table provided, the users can share their snacks and have conversation.

-vending machine locations : each cultural vending machine can be located at the place where it relates to the characteristic of the culture or the benefit of the food. Ex) Greek v.m can be located near the fountain since there are many fountains in Greece..

-snack with give away toys or something that can be collected : then the youth will come back to collect other things.

so, these ideas were generated to make the experience fun and continuable.

last week, I totally focused on developing my snack company brand: brand naming and snack selection.. After I talked with Tak on thursday, I felt that I was not looking at things broadly enough. I kind of directed myself to the smallest part of my solution.

I realized that creating this brand and designing the package are not enough to engage
the student. It is like who cares about these snacks? More important thing to think about is how to engage them so that they can interact with the snack..I should look more about designing experience of the vending machine user..

-where the vending machine will be located?
-how my vending machine different from other ordinary machines?
-how would I differenciate each cultures?
-how would they get the food? is it just pushing and picking or something else?
-where sharing experience would happen at? tables around the machine?
-how would I make them to come back and try something else later?
-what do they see appealing? the way the food delievers to the user?
-is the experience active, passive, or interactive?

Experience designers are often employed to identify existing touchpoints and create new ones, and then to score the arrangement of these touchpoints so that they produce the desired outcome.

Broader context

In the broader environmental context, there is far less formal attention given to the design of the experienced environment, physical and virtual -- but though it's unnoticed, experience design is taking place. Ronald Jones, describes the practice as working across disciplines, often furthest from their own creating a relevant integration between concepts, methods and theories. Experience designers design experiences over time with real and measurable consequences; time is their medium. According to Jones, the mission of Experience Design is "to persuade, stimulate, inform, envision, entertain, and forecast events, influencing meaning and modifying human behavior."^[2]

Focus debated

There is a debate occurring in the experience design community regarding its focus, provoked in part by design scholar and practitioner, Don Norman. Norman claims that when designers describe people only as customers, consumers, and users and designers risk diminishing their ability to do good design.^[3] Given that experience is so totally an affective, subjective, and personal process -- not an abstract --- it would be ironic, it's been argued, for experience designers, when designing experiences, to approach people merely as objects of commerce or cogs in a machine. Experience design, perhaps more than other forms of design, is transactive and transformative: every experience designer is an experiencer; and every experiencer, via his or her reactions, a designer of experience in turn. While commercial contexts often describe people as "customers, consumers, or users," this and non-commercial contexts might use the words "audience, people, and participants." In either case, for conscientious experience designers, this is merely a semantic difference.

Multiple dimensions

Experience design is not driven by a single design discipline. Instead, it requires a cross-discipline perspective that considers multiple aspects of the brand/business/environment/experience - from product, packaging and retail environment to the clothing and attitude of employees. Experience design seeks to develop the experience of a product, service, or event along any or all of the following dimensions:^[4]

Duration (Initiation, Immersion, Conclusion, and Continuation)
Intensity (Reflex, Habit, Engagement)
Breadth (Products, Services, Brands, Nomenclatures, Channels/Environment/Promotion, and Price)
Interaction (Passive < > Active < >Interactive)
Triggers (All Human Senses, Concepts, and Symbols)
Significance (Meaning, Status, Emotion, Price, and Function)

While it's unnecessary (or even inappropriate) for all experiences to be developed highly across all of these dimensions, the more in-depth and consistently a product or service is developed across them -- the more responsive an offering is to a group's or individual's needs and desires (e.g., a customer) it's likely to be. Enhancing the affordance of a product or service, its interface with people, is key to commercial experience design.

I read "the Brand Gap" by Marty Neumeier that was suggested by my mentor. It has nice illustrations, easy to read(big types), and easy to understand. It also had little/quick summary at the back.

He says,

"A brand is a person's gut feeling about a product, service, or company. It's not what you say it is. It's what THEY say it is."

"People base their buying decisions more on symbolic cues than features, benefits, and price. Make sure your symbols are compelling."

after meeting with Don, I felt relieved for the first time...

1) Okay! for this week, start collecting content!

I will focus on deciding what multicultural snacks to be in my brand.
I was worried + confused if my snacks have to meet this BC Nutritional Guidelines which seemed limited my selections and directions so much!

But after I talked with Don, I gained my confidence, and as long as the snack represents the taste and essence of the culture and can be made in reality, I can invent new multicultural snacks.
I can bend some rules of BC ;-p

ex) Italian snack can be a taste of Parmesan cheese, basil, oregano, or other herbs
South Indian snack can taste like curry, coconut, chili
Japanese snack can taste like wasabi, seaweed paper, ginger?! kkk
Chinese snack.. there are so many options there

This way, it makes me easier to decide what kind of snacks I will bring into my V.M.
I don't have to go out and find existing snacks which I tried but found it difficult.

I am thinking to bring as many kinds of cultures into my V.M
I should do some research what kind of tastes the cultures are known for(something that can represent the cultures)

I thought about the process of buying snacks from the vending machine.

for me, usually I have no idea what I am going to buy before I get to the vending machine.
When I get to there, I glance at all products inside..
let's assume that every product is new to me, and I am looking for something healthy for me..
What I can see is just the front side, not the nutrition facts side..I need to depend on the description(ingridients), the brand name, and the img on the package (design, img of the product). If the package looks artificial or has some words that sounds exaggerated, I usually avoid it. I prefer the product that shows what is inside.

in order to give the feel of healthiness, the brand name, graphic(color,illustration or photo), ingridients description should be well presented.. truthful, comfortable, natural

The forced on Learning English market is a really strange situation here in Japan… Although people study so hard at school, the fact that they have almost zero opportunity to actually ’speak’ English (at school and in real life) causes a big shyness and English panic. This however creates a comfortable niche for tons of English schools to ask outrageous prices for a little bit of ’speaking time’.

I wonder who decides what kind of phrases are picked for these packages… I’m glad they didn’t chose Learning for Life! - that would really depress me!

This traditional Daruma wish doll works like that: make a wish and draw in his left eye, wait until the wish comes true and then pencil in his other eye. Well, the Caramel Corn already has one eye, so you can use the side panel of the package to actually write down your wish:

The package design have the opportunity to create interaction with the consumer..Like the two examples up there, I can use my package design to educate and entertain my audience about the culture.. pack·ag·ing [pak-uh-jing] - noun

an act or instance of packing or forming packages: At the end of the production line is a machine for packaging.
the package in which merchandise is sold or displayed: Attractive packaging can help sell a product.

To me, the feeling of opening a well designed package exemplifies good design. All the little nuances contribute to an individual experience. Kind of a lame example here, but when I first opened my Macbook Pro or iPhone, I got a feeling who apple is as a company and the standard they hold themselves at (not to mention the reaction to the product itself). This can all happen very naturally, but we as designers look to analyze that process and replicate it. Getting this kind of reaction to a product’s package before the consumer even reaches the actual ‘product’ itself is an accomplishment.

Plant a Seed

I understand that geeking out over unusual packaging is a strictly designer joy, but conveying more attention to detail is something that can be taken at face value, as well as scrutinized to the ‘enth’ degree. If a package grabs someone’s attention, your most likely to hear a “Huh, that’s kinda cool.” There’s no real revelation had by the average consumer. But what your doing is planting the seed that may stick in their mind making the product seem more relevant, or personal to them.

Beyond that, some people just flat out want to be better than their competition. So they look to inject quality into every aspect of their product. Design can convey that message in a very unique and personal way. Whether targeting a specific demographic, or an entire populace, we have the means to convey quality and individuality before the consumer even knows what the product is. Real world benefits are clear to see when a Design firm re-brands a product’s packaging and sales increase 35%. Product packaging is no joke, and serious companies look to designers for results. On the other hand, creatives in the movie and music industry recognize the opportunity for a more artistic approach to selling their products.

The Price Tag

The relevance of good packaging is present in both the corporate and creative ends of the client spectrum. I think most people would agree that a degree of custom packaging would never be a bad thing. One of the main hindering factors in pimping out clients packaging is the price tag. Many start ups or creatives dont have the cash to invest in something that isnt considered 100% necessary. But Im a firm believer in presenting yourself as serious as you want to be taken by others. Now that doesnt mean if your serious your going to automatically get a custom packaging job for your new album. In terms of taking that extra step in presenting yourself, or making sure your product’s utmost quality is preserved for a consumer, there are few better ways to impress than investing in custom work.

judge that book

I know most of you are waiting for the ‘judge a book’ metaphor to be flipped on its ear somewhere
in this article - “go ahead, judge that book by its cover!”… but no cliches here. Have you ever found yourself saying, ‘Psssh, that Limited Edition CD packaging is sooo cliche’. Probably not.

Odds are, the design speaks volumes about the musicians. Whether it’s Beck and his DIY sticker package, or Green Day providing a blank CD to allow customers to burn a copy for their friends. Different artist have different visions… Or at least a unique perspective. So, I think we’ll steer clear from cliches in this article in the spirit of good design.

First off… im a sucker for kits. Any sort of kit that contains a booklet, a t-shirt, and some random goodies has me at hello. I dont care how lame or irrelevant the actual stuff is. Below I picked out some cool pieces.

Some Basics.

If your used to strictly working on a screen or are from a fine art background, you’re all too familiar with the training/development of your ‘eye’. This is obviously our creative intuition that dictates pouring over countless revisions until a layout looks just right. On the other hand (hehe), training yourself to think with your hands until something feels right (double pun) is a whole other animal. There are many connections to be made from the two however.

Texture, an element of design, can be literally translated from the eye to the hand. You can go down the line with that train of thought; Line, Scale, Balance…. all can be translated without much (if any) stretch of the imagination. Try shifting your production process from the eye to your hand. If an illustration your working on needs a little texture or weight added to it, don’t look online for a cool picture. Look around you. What makes something heavy in your hand might also apply to your illustration…make your lines and texture more dense…add perspective. Often times a different approach may shake up your design routine opening up new doors for exploration.

Every designer should work with their hands. Whether its sketching or mocking up your original CD package, training your hand allows you to tangibly realize your ideas. Packaging in it’s appeal and production, (here it comes….) is hands on (duh). This means that a customer isn’t only going to look at the cover, but they’re going to be swayed by how it feels and functions.

Packaging (and Design in general) is USEFUL ART. So the obligation to make the project different in form is also accompanied by the obligation for it to function appropriately. How is the package more than just elaborated wrapping paper? Does it do its job?

These ideas apply to every packaging job. This presents new and different challenges to every project. So really what this does is expand your creative tool set to include more ways to flesh out your designs. We’re talking:

alternative papers (organic, synthetic, varying stocks…)

alternative/custom casing (folds, shapes, varying functionality/different closures)

alternative printing (inks, paints, dies, finishes)

and on and on it goes. If your goal in design is to convey a message, these additional tools can only amplify that message.

The more connections you make from one creative discipline to another, the stronger and more diverse your work will become.

One thing that is a necessity when trying to break into custom packaging jobs, is getting to know the production process. Printing posters is one thing, getting to how custom die-cut packages are made is a little more involved. Knowing what paper will work with a certain fold or how it will react with a special varnish you apply to it is a matter of research and experimentation. There are many resources out there that help to fill in the blanks.

Here are some choice books to check out:

Beyond reading up, start collecting and creating. If you read design magazines usually there are a ton of ads for paper and printing companies (most notably in HOW). I have quite a stash built up from collecting over the years. And if you’re feeling especially driven, send away for a swatch book from printers or paper suppliers… People have been know to make up companies to get their hands on the coveted ’source’ book from printers (…). But don’t wait on getting the ‘right’ paper or tools. Start with what you’ve got.

Start making your own mock ups. Get your self some nice blades and start constructing your own creations. You can find some decent paper to work with at art stores, but the important thing is you start thinking about your how your designs can be furthered using custom hand finishing. Remember, good is in the details.

I went to Windermere Secondary school and King George School in order to get some help from the students in the future. I basically introduced my project in short and asked for their e-mail adresses.. I hope they can look at my work and give me feedback later..
As I talked about my multicultural snack vending machine, it was great that some students seemed to be really interested in and excited about it.

I also looked at vending machines around the school, they had some energy bar or granola bars, cereals, some baked chips.. juice or diet coke, diet sprite something like that..
Some of them don't look that healthy though.. "choose sometimes"

I am not sure what kind of cultural snacks I should bring into my product line..
does it have to be traditional snack? or made or imported from other countries?
...? should not worry about it?? should I just assume that they are healthy even thought they are not because it is just a project n not real?

Product lining is the marketing strategy of offering for sale several related products. Unlike product bundling, where several products are combined into one, lining involves offering several related products individually. A line can comprise related products of various sizes, types, colors, qualities, or prices. Line depth refers to the number of product variants in a line. Line consistency refers to how closely related the products that make up the line are. Line vulnerability refers to the percentage of sales or profits that are derived from only a few products in the line.

The number of different product lines sold by a company is referred to as width of product mix. The total number of products sold in all lines is referred to as length of product mix. If a line of products is sold with the same brand name, this is referred to as family branding. When you add a new product to a line, it is referred to as a line extension. When you add a line extension that is of better quality than the other products in the line, this is referred to as trading up or brand leveraging. When you add a line extension that is of lower quality than the other products of the line, this is referred to as trading down. When you trade down, you will likely reduce your brand equity. You are gaining short-term sales at the expense of long term sales.

today, I went to supermarket and looked for some snacks with low calories, fat, sodium, and sugar. It was difficult to find multicultural snacks that satisfy all these conditions.. most of them have too much sodium.. some stuff looked delicious but not healthy.

-While I was shopping, I realized that I should look at how the government defines "junk food".

-And also thought that, there are too many different types of snack, I should decide how I will design my product line in order to bind all products together. They should be harmonized and related with each other.

So when I came home I researched how the government define "junk food" They had the "Healthier Choices in Vending Machines in B.C. Public Buildings Policy Paper" and also "Nutritional Guidelines for Vending Machines in B.C. Public Buildings"

And also there is one website that searches for the brand which provide products that qualify "choose most" in the "Nutritional Guidelines" Most brands are Western but still I can use the information to select my own multicultural "choose most" list.

I am thinking of going for fruit/vegetable snack line because it seems easier to find healthy fruit/vegetable snack from other countries. We all share ingridients but the difference is how we cook or how we eat them.

With interesting and attractive cultural snack packaging design, I will draw youth's attention to different cultures. By providing healthy and delicious snacks for youth, I would like to deliver the message that accepting other cultures(difference) can benefit your life; it is enjoyable and healthy.

These stories make me think, try to connect with the story.

I'd like to do this for my project.
collecting stories of youth and make a book that we can all share and feel other's stories.
focuse on one's cultural food experience, they can talk about thier own food culture(their dinner, birthday foods, holiday, traditional food) or one's experience of new food.
some stories they want to share with others which they think it is worthy to spread.
ex) the first time using chapstick or some happening resulted from ignorance of the cultural etiquette.

I can ask them to take photo or draw images while they are having and after the experience of the food culture. record how you eat, what you eat, with whom, at where, feeling, etc.

I can gather stories by actually interviewing them or call for stories+image/photo or asking them to collect stories their own so that they can interact with others and share their
story in person.

after collecting the stories I can make a book, poster, wall paper, or poster card, etc. something can be spread.

This one can be used in classroom environment.
The teacher or one student draw a card, and everyone follow the instruction. Report the findings in the next class. maybe one or two students present their findings and the whole class can share the experience for about 10 min. If they are eager to talk about it more, they can do this after the class or school. they can swap each other's scrap book to share their opinion.

Through the instructional kit in a classroom environment, they can push themselves to do something. The experience will educate the student about other cultures in terms of
manner, menu, taboo, shopping, dinning places, etc.

They can learn thing outside of the classroom

Since they like snack and spend most of their money for it, it is easy to get to the audience and also be effective in a good way.
Attract the audience to multicultural snacks through visual(characteristic of each culture).
As they experience and know more about other cultural snacks, it can develop their interests and interaction with the culture. By including some educational information about each culture on the package or inside somewhere, the audience can get knowledge about the culture.

I've read this article for my contemporary theory class and came up with two ideas that might be helpful for my project.

1) In order to learn something you need to put yourself in that environment. you need to interact with the unknown.
(as he went to observe and interview marihuana users to understand what make them to smoke. as the novice who interacted with more experienced users in order to learn how to smoke it for pleasure)

Through this experience, I hope my audience will gain their own conception of other culture, and it will motivate them to know more about other cultures and to increase the interaction.

Unofficially, belief in the value of Canada’s multicultural society is widespread and talked about
casually in everyday life. Often, Canadians use “multiculturalism” to differentiate their culture from the largely influential, predominant culture of the United States. The acknowledgement of Canada’s diversity is taught to students of all ages in Canadian schools without regularly being challenged.

Although the concept of “multiculturalism” raises the potential for many positive developments in society, it can also be responsible for perpetuating the inherent possibility of segregation and division present in a community containing many cultural and ethnic groups. In some cases, it creates a feeling of “otherness” by implying that Canadians can be divided into “us” and “them” groups. “Us” indicates the White dominant culture, while “they” are the “other” who do not belong wholly to the dominant culture for whatever reason (skin colour, birthplace, etc.).This message is reinforced by use of the concepts of tolerance, accommodation, sensitivity, harmony, and diversity. Because the word “tolerance” implies accommodating something that is not entirely desired, emphasis on these concepts suggests that one must accept and deal with “the other” within the dominant (superior) culture, without necessarily respecting or feeling equal with the different cultural groups. By not acknowledging the weaknesses of official multicultural policy, the seemingly harmless beliefs that are nurtured through the use of words like “tolerance” and “diversity” are hidden.
Because it is likely that the word multiculturalism will often be used defensively in order to
prove Canada’s innocence in issues of racism, it is important to address these hidden assumptions, so that people may begin to question and identify what their own beliefs are.

At the beginning of my research, I've done some research on Vancouver's multiculturalism.
And also, did some research on hate crime in Canada in order to understand the problem of multiculturalism.

As you can see, the highest motivation of hate crime in Canada is "Race/Ethnicity" and "Religion". Even though Vancouver has lower hate crime rate than other places, it is more important to know it still exists. Surprisingly, most hate crimes committed by the youth group age from 12-17.

I saw the big need there for youth in order to set things right.

I also went to China at the China town. Honestly, China town trip was not interesting as much as the South India trip was. I guess, it is just because Chinese traditional culture is pretty similar to Korean. If I were from western or other culture, I would've been amazed !

overall, I could see the Chinese culture through the colour, language, graphic signs, temple, architecture, food, fashion, etc! Each culture definitely has its own Uniqueness!

It was my first visit there, and I was so excited by just walking around the street!
if you have not visited there yet, I recommend you to visit!
you can see through the pictures that it is so full of their own culture.

6.menu design
design a cultural menu that stimulate one's appetite/interest. make them want to try something new, know more about the culture. The menu can be separated into appetizer, main, and dessert sections.

I believe, many people are already aware of the multicultural culture and enjoy benefits from it. But still there are some individuals

who are not used to multiculturalism,
who may believe they are superior to other ethnic groups,
who sticks to one's own culture and isolate oneself from the other cultures
who have fears/assumptions of other cultures
who have lack of understanding/interest of other's culture

step back and avoid interacting with other cultures(fail to accept,respect, and celebrate) which result

misunderstanding

My goal is to encourage my audience to be open and acceptive of other cultures through personal learning and experiencing. By doing that, I hope we can reduce the cultural gap/problem and unite as one.

- branding neighbourhoods
- finding/traveling neighbourhoods (story of personal experiences)
- design a map (where to go to experience real multicultural life style) ex) Chinatown(traditional + for tourists' sightseeing) vs T&T supermarket(real living style?)
- creating fusion festivals
- collection of inspirational cultural characteristics in order to solve individual or social problems : we have much to gain from each other
- recipe (healthy eating, cultural experience/learning, learning commonness)
- creating dialogues on multiculturalism (comment,question,reply) : web, book, street campaign
- signage design around each neighbourhoods describing the characteristics, events, what to do, etc.

I guess I can't define what my position is.
I feel like I am digging a hole. The deeper I get in, the more I panic.
The reason is I guess I am not so sure what I am doing.
I will try to define my problem/position again..to make myself clear..

Through my observation and research, I can see so many benefits we can get from having the multiculturalism in Vancouver.

economy, cultures(food,music,dance,movies,art), languages, learning/experiencing opportunities, religions, values, etc
we can learn and adopt some good aspects of other cultures.
enhance the quality of lives (interesting, dynamic, experienced)
unite cultures

However, for some people

who are not used to multiculturalism,
who believe they are superior to other ethnic groups,

especially in Vancouver, I think new commers (immigrants, workers, students, travellers) belong to 1-4.

- automatically say "NO" when you offer him/her a new food
- generally percieved to be stubborn, inflexible, obstinate, and unadventurous.
- no pressure but need to be familiar with certain menu items.
- show how other people eat it. (why don't you?)
- give your dishes kid-friendly names (beautiful butterfly cheese sandwich. Some kids prefer names like Eyeball Soup or Greasy Hair Spaghetti)

Fear of the Unknown / Culture Shock

is quite a common phenomenon with human beings, when they do not with to accept or meet with anything unfamiliar in terms of any situation or individual.

It is a fear that keeps us average, keeps us doing all the same things everybody else is doing, simply because it is the familiar thing to do.

if allowed to persist, the fear can ultimately lead to a very restricted life stlye, devorid of the various essences in life.

reason? there is a certain safety center in our body that keeps us alarmed of the various dangers that come into our way of life. "if it is unfamiliar, it could be dangerous. Only trust the things you know.'

symptoms? rapid heart rate, dry mouth, constant perspiration, lack of clear thought and speech, trembling in fear, breathing trouble

Though this type of fear is not that fatal to an individual, yet it should definitely be remedied in order to enjoy a healthy carefree life bereft of any fear. We have to turn the unfamilial into familiar. (meditation, playing upon our imagination)

Culture Shock seems to similar to Racism/Division

Remember, the key to getting over your culture shock is understanding the new culture and finding a way to live comfortably within it while keeping true to the parts of your culture that you value.

Educate people about your culture. Just because you're the one entering the new culture doesn't mean you should be the one doing all the learning. Take the opportunity to teach classmates and new friends about your culture; they may know little about it. It will also help them to learn more about you in the process. Invite them over for traditional dishes from your culture, or show them how you celebrate your holidays.

Study Up

A lot of the anxiety that comes with moving to a new place has to do with not knowing what to expect in your new environment. Learning things about your new environment will help you become more comfortable.

School is a great place to do this. Watch and learn from the people around you — see how the students interact with teachers and each other. Find out what your classmates do for fun and what kinds of things are important to them.

You can also get some insight from television and movies, but be careful — not everything you see on the screen is meant to be realistic. But these media do help if you're still trying to learn the language or catch up on some slang, and at the very least, give you something to talk about when you're trying to make a new friend.

You don't have to love everything you find out about the culture, or start acting the way that others do, but when you gain knowledge of what people mean when they say certain phrases or why they dress a certain way, you do begin to feel better.

Learn the Language

Depending on where you come from and where you are now, you may or may not have trouble with the native language. It's a good idea to become comfortable with the language as soon as you can. Not being able to understand what people are saying is almost as frustrating as not knowing how to make people understand what you are saying.

Lots of good resources are around to help you practice. Many schools with a good number of students new to the country have language classes. If your school doesn't offer one, check out some of the community centers and libraries in your area. In addition, books make good resources too, and even some websites.

Whatever method you choose, practice is really important. A lot of people are worried about speaking a language they aren't completely comfortable with and think that people who speak the language well will tease them when they stumble over words. This might tempt you to practice the language with someone who is at the same comfort level as you, but it's also important to practice with people who have mastered the language, so that you know when you make a mistake and learn from it.

It might make you uncomfortable when it takes you twice as long to say the same thing as a native speaker, or use the wrong word, but remember that you have nothing to be ashamed of.

Even if you're familiar with the new language spoken around you, chances are you don't know a lot of the slang — casual speech that doesn't make it into translation dictionaries (or most dictionaries, for that matter). This is one of the many reasons why it's a good idea to do some studying on the culture you are immersed in.

Commercial Drive used to be predominately an Italian part of Vancouver
(pronounced Vancoover or Vankoover) up until the early 1980’s,
but now a days, like the rest of Vancouver, it’s very much a mixed community where people of all ethnic backgrounds live work and visit.

Gonna eat that?

we all eat something "gross"

Sometimes, when I go to the superstore to shop,
I find myself staring at some food and wordering
'what is this for? who would eat this? how? how does it taste like?'

Durian, the spiky fruit
Century egg, also known as preserved egg
make me curious all the time.

One time, when I went to buy a pack of cow tail bone for my soup
someone asked me what it is and how do I cook it.
For me, the cow tail bone is so common ingridient to cook with,
but I guess for her, it might be strange.

at this point, I think I should go to some ethnic glocery stores
to see what they sell. There must be something more interesting + shocking!!

I am working at a Japanese restaurant; it has been about 4 years.
From my observation, I have seen many people tend to order some food that they only know of or they always eat. Some people who are usually long-term customer, they do not even look at the menu at all. Some people who are totally new to or not used to Japanese food mostly order the “safe and boring” rolls such as dynamite roll or califonia roll. I think that people tend to stay in a comfort/safe zone when they order food especially at ethnic restaurants.

From this observation, I was thinking how to make ppl to try new food, to make the process
of ordering more interesting and dynamic. However, after I talked with Don, I realized that
my problem and goal could go further.

okay, here is my problem + solution

Problem : In Vancouver, the most multicultural city in the world, I believe that people failed to
experience, accept and celebrate other cultures because of the fear and assumption of
the unknown.
